The new Mental Toughness


The terms “Mental Toughness” and “Flow” are used to describe desirable mental states that produce performances that are “Perfect”, “effortless”, “painless”, “in another dimension” and coping with every pressure situation.


The concept of Flow is very simplistic because it creates an image of a magical mental state  that is elusive, and completely un trainable.


But descriptions from players and athletes show, a mental state like flow seems to be associated with their individual training and competition preparation. Flow and mental toughness appear to be highly associated with long term intense training of sport specific skills.


Descriptions of mental toughness include the key mental skills of concentration, motivation, confidence and control. Without even using these terms, the players are saying they have perfect concentration, high levels of motivation and satisfaction along with high confidence in skill performance. Simultaneously the terms effortless and painless indicate they are not experiencing anxiety, fear, frustration, anger or any other emotion that would hinder their performance.
