In 1982 Alan Hely commenced practice in Sport Psychology and Stress Management in Sydney Australia. In the following years Hely worked with many national and international ranked individuals and champions. In 1985 it became apparent that when a player recorded and scored their mental skills scores as 75% or higher during competition, there was almost a perfect correlation with winning the match.
This meant that when the combined mental skills performance scores on concentration, motivation, confidence and control were 75% or higher there was a high probability of winning. Hence the Winning Zone was created to describe entry to that zone of performance occurring when mental skills are at their highest.
Further research and application of world recognised best practice in Sport Psychology, Skill Acquisition and the many features of Cognitive Behavior Therapy have enable the development of the Winning Zone Mindset and the New Mental Toughness.
Going beyond sport psychology the latest knowledge in modern Behavioral Sciences allows understanding and training in high level mental skills, a necessary requirement for top performers.
The parable of the old plumber and the steel works boiler.
One day the giant boiler at the steelworks broke down. Nobody could get it to work. Not the maintenance staff nor the technicians, not even the engineers.
They thumped it, kicked it, rebooted it. Nothing worked.
Somebody said “Try the old plumber who was here when it was built”
They called the old plumber. He immediately inspected the boiler. He walked around it twice, stopped, pulled out a small silver hammer and tapped on the side of the boiler. It started immediately.
The plumber submitted an account for $1000.00
The steel works accountant thought that was too expensive for tapping with a hammer and asked for an itemised account.
The plumber supplied an itemised account:
For tapping with hammer $ 1.00
For knowing where to tap and for
knowing to tap and not kick - $999.00
Total fee for expertise supplied $1000.00
